Impactful Philanthropic Investments for your Clients: Protecting Hawai‘i’s Fresh Water

If you have clients looking to make a difference across the Islands with their philanthropy, there can be no better investment than protecting Hawaiʻi’s fresh water.

Rainfall in Hawai‘i has decreased by 23 percent over the past 30 years, while the Islands’ population has continued to grow, by almost 25 percent over the same period. To address this potential fresh-water crisis, HCF created the Wai Maoli: Hawai‘i Fresh Water Initiative. Established in 2013, the Hawai‘i Fresh Water Initiative convened experts and stakeholders from all sides of the issue, including agriculture leaders, private landowners, scientists, and government officials. Together, these stakeholders created a plan to proactively address and resolve water supply issues for our state.

Since its launch, the Hawai‘i Fresh Water Initiative has helped support and pass 13 key state and county laws and policies to strengthen Hawai‘i’s freshwater security. Members of the Fresh Water Initiative Council continue to work together to help implement the recommendations in the plan. To track the latest progress of the initiative, check out the Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard.
